My dark secret...not really

  • Jan. 6th, 2009 at 4:22 AM

For those that know me personally I am pretty bad ass ;) I have tattoos and piercings and a bit of a leather boot addiction. I love riding thousand pound animals, boxed and swear like a merchant marine with turrets syndrome.

But...

I collect unicorns. Happy pink unicorns and hello kitty. My inner feminist vomits a little every time I buy one but I do in all their pink glittery glory. I don't know why but I love them. It started early with the Whisper the winged unicorn books (they came with stickers) I loved them. Then I got a My little pony, then another, then my grandpa was building a stable for them. The first thing I ever bought with my own money was a little stuffed unicorn I later named Lancelot. I wonder if my mom still has him? By the time I was in college I had quite a collection though sadly there was an accident with them and most where lost forever. It was sad but I get to start over again and that can be fun too. I did last year start back up with collecting them again. My favorite so far is a hand sculpted one someone made and was selling on EBAY. It is pink and has little fairy wings. My oldest and largest piece was recently broken by a houseguest. It went on tour with a rock group but didn't last 5 min with them. I need to figure out how to mend it. Hopefully you guys aren't too unicorned out. I want to do the day and night ones before I do the 4 seasons dragons. My current project has 7 paintings 2 of which are unicorns, so brace yourself ;) The Ash Evans Zodiac is declaring this year the Year of the Unicorn!

Yeah I totally like these too...

New Year, New art!

  • Jan. 1st, 2009 at 3:11 PM

Hi Everyone,

I am happy to say I put the last touches on my last painting of the year yesterday afternoon so today I can show them all to you. I have been working on some mixed media four seasons unicorns!! They are all draft horses because that is what I love the most. I will be posting them up for sale on the site in a few, I just wanted to share them with you now.

Winter Winds: Watercolor, ink and colored pencil on watercolor paper.

Spring Awakening: Watercolor, ink and colored pencil on watercolor paper

Summer Breeze: Watercolor, ink and colored pencil on watercolor paper

Autumn Splendor: Watercolor, ink and colored pencil on watercolor paper

Heaven and earth designs has already charted 3 of these: http://www.heavenandearthdesigns.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=175_271_273

The fourth one is coming.

I will be selling individual prints as well as a 4 piece print pack of these guys. I have a LOT of plans this year. I am going to be a guest at a show and I have an interview coming up. All kinds of good stuff. Today though, I am going to take it a little easy, we had SUCH fun at the party last night. I will post pics later.

Fallen knight WIP

  • Sep. 22nd, 2008 at 8:40 PM

Hi Everyone,
I've been busy busy busy! I have prints available up on the site of Sea Spray. I have even made a matted archival one which is hand accented. I really like how it turned out. I have been sketching out some new pieces. I have a new digital piece called Fallen Knight. The horse you see here has seen some battle and is returning home without the hero who once rode him. This will most likely be a very somber looking piece. Lots of detail, metal, leather, fabric and rocks and trees. I don't know how quickly I am going to be able to finish this one. I do think I will finish Enchanted moon this week so I will still have something new for you all by Sunday. I want to get as many pieces as I can finished for the con and really after try to keep this pace so I have some nice things for the holidays as well. I had a lot of fun making this armored horse so I would say it is safe to say that if this one goes well there will be more where that came from. I heart draft horses SO MUCH. I could paint them and nothing else forever but that would be boring for you so I promise I won't. If anyone is wondering why I have gone unicorn crazy lately it is because I am getting psyched up for a calendar I am working on for next year! With a real publisher even..I will have do make some more critters for you guys so you don't get bored but I want this calendar to be PERFECT. So bear with me.

Anyway I hope you like it and I will be posting again soon.

18 days to Faeriecon!!

Weekend and new art

  • Sep. 21st, 2008 at 10:32 PM

Hi Everyone,

I had a really busy weekend so I didn't get as much painting as I would have liked to done but I did finish my one painting for the week so I am on track still for Faeriecon!

Sea Spray

Another digital painting done from scratch in Photoshop. Prints and merchandise are available on the website.

I really like how she turned out. I think I am getting the hang of this digital painting thing. Now if only Painter X was this easy for me!! I have some finishing things to do on Enchanted Moon so I may have two paintings for you next week. I have some personal stuff to do so I am not sure how that is going to go.

Anyway I DID manage to have a little bit of fun this weekend as well. Johnnie and I took my grandfather to the MD Renn Faire this weekend. His relatives owned the farm land it is on once upon a time and he hasn't been there in 70 years! It was just a bunch of chicken coops when he saw it last and he was surprised by how different it was. He also got to meet some distant relatives which was nice. He really had a great time and we took him around and showed him the faire and watched a joust. Here are a few snaps from the event:
Me and my Pop at the Faire

Us at the Boar's Head sampling some of their beer.

One of the two elephants, I actually just took this for Steven.

We watched one of the jousts,I got some amazing reference photos from it!! I heart hossies!!

A good time was had by all! Pop is already taking about going back.He didn't get to see everything all in one visit. There is a lot to see and do there.

I am doing a LATE video blog this evening so I can stay on track with that as well. I will be posting it soon. New art coming soon, now if only the digital painting would let me get some traditional medium stuff going.

Hope everyone had a great weekend!

Works in Progress

  • Sep. 19th, 2008 at 2:06 PM

Hi Everyone,

I know I have been sort of quiet on the art front lately. I have been bouncing between a few projects which means I will have a lot of art at once instead of it being released once a week or something like that. I have been working on Enchanted Moon. I have also been working on two digital pieces.

Working title for this one is Sea Spray

This is actually character development for the Purrsnicketys graphic novel. This is Harlow the dust bunny. He lives under Jitters bed. I am pleased at how he turned out.

White Rabbit from my digital wonderland series. I want to do the caterpillar as well but we will see.

This weekend I want to finish Enchanted moon OR Sea Spray OR both. I also have to do some house cleaning and studio organizing. I have a boatload of supplies coming soon!

I am thinking of having all my original paintings up for negotiation. I have a LOT of canvas and things coming. So if there is something you have had your eye on just email me ashevans@phoenixxfirestudios.com and we can talk about it. Ignore the prices on the site, just let me know what you are willing to pay for it. I don't get huffy or insulted or anything like that.

I also have two one of a kind licensed statuary pieces, one Peepers and one Thunderclap that will NEVER be made, they where not the right size. So I am thinking about auctioning them off too.

I hope everyone has an awesome weekend! If the weather is nice I may take my grandpa (Pop) to the Renn Faire. His relatives owned the land and he used to play there when it was a chicken farm. He hasn't ever seen it in its changed state..He has always wanted to go. We where waiting for a nice cool day.

Like Clockwork is DONE!!!

He happened upon her by chance. He guessed it was the explosion and then the swearing that drew him in. Piles of parts where strewn about the place and his foot became acquainted with a very heavy motor on the floor. "What on earth are you up to?" he asked, barely suppressing his contempt for the rusty motor. She looked up from grimy goggles, smiled and exclaimed "Unicorns" But unicorns aren't real he retorted . "Ah but my good fellow in this day in age if you can dream it you can BUILD it.I am in the business of building dreams. Behold Gearshift my horse, he always wanted to be special.""Are the brass boots to help with landing?"" Oh no those where his idea. He thought they would look cool."

For Brigid, the steampunkiest person I know :) This started out as a joke but I got talked into making it a reality.

Prints and goodies available tomorrow!!!

Like Clockwork WIP

Still working like mad trying to finish Like clockwork! I REALLY want to finish it today so I can stay on schedule. I have a sketch for my next painting, an acrylic on oval canvas called Enchanted moon. This will be another of my unicorn moon series. I want to plot out tomorrow what I will be painting up until and maybe even at Faeriecon. Not much time left at all. I will be painting live on USTREAM again today. I will do a quickie post to let you know when. Feel free to come watch and ask me questions, you don't need to be a member or USTREAM to watch.

Phoenix Moon got moderators choice on Elfwood on Friday which was cool. I have had a few of them before but not many that is for sure! I made some Phoenix Moon prints and they turned out really lovely. I even have a Phoenix Moon matted archival print in the works.

Today I may run out to Michaels and see if there is anything good on sale for Labor Day. I am really wanting some things from my Dick Blick wish list but alas it will have to wait!

I hope everyone is having a fun weekend!!

Still painting! I feel like even after all the work I put into this piece I am still not any closer to it being finished. Luckily I have a long weekend to get it all finished up. Johnnie and I will also be doing some things with the house. It isn't much longer until we have guests. I can't believe how fast time is flying.

Here is a white rabbit piece I have been working on off and on forever:

I am not sure how I feel about it anymore, I may scrap it all together so don't get attached.

I have another unicorn piece half painted. Sheesh! Finish something Ash!!!!!

Hi Everyone,

I am still painting away on my new painting, Like Clockwork. No I haven't even started in on the horse yet. I wanted to get the hard metal bits out of the way in case I couldn't pull it off. I want to finish the three gears on his back today. I still have a long way to go but if I stay motivated I think I will have it done by this weekend. I want to try and release a piece a week from now until Faeriecon but I am not sure if the rest of my life is going to cooperate with this notion. We will see, at least I have a goal. I am mad I haven't even touched Painter X!!! I fiddled with it went crap this is too hard to figure out and went back to Photoshop.

Well I need to get back to it.

Have a great day!

WIP Updates

  • Aug. 22nd, 2008 at 12:31 AM

Hello Everyone,

I have put in SO many hours painting the past few days. I did about 19 hours yesterday and 9 today. I have been alternating between two paintings. The first being Phoenix Moon.

I want to have Phoenix Moon complete by the end of this weekend if the muse says it is OK. I started painting Like Clockwork yesterday and put all of the 19 hours in on it. I did about 8 today and spent the last hour on Phoenix Moon. I am very pleased at how it is coming out. Please ignore the ugly bits it is a process like anything else. I did the wings today.

I have never painted a man made texture in my life and in this one I have metal and leather. I have never painted wood either and that is a new one for me as well. I am having a lot of fun with these pieces they are the most detailed and challenging ones I have ever done so far. I have loads of other ideas but I really want to finish something for a change. The muse does what she wants though.

Well off to bed I have an early morning tomorrow!

I *may* be going to Renn Faire this weekend, only if I really feel like I earned it tomorrow. All I ever want to do lately is work and work and work.

"Like Clockwork"

Again it is sketchy, I have a lot of fiddly bits to work out. The muse apparently wants sketching today...

Unicorn Sketch

  • Aug. 20th, 2008 at 6:25 AM

I got up at 3:33 this morning after having about 5 hours of sleep. I read Two Hearts by Peter S Beagle (which is the sequel to The Last Unicorn) Got in the shower and this sketch came to me. I don't ask or argue with the muse anymore. I try not to think about things as much either. I usually don't post sketches or works in progress, they make me squirmy but I decided I need to just get over myself.

I have never done a more traditional looking unicorn before. I want to do a Pegasus but I have had a fear of feathers. Perhaps I was killed during a heated pillow fight in a past life. I guess with Phoenix Moon I am getting over that fast.I will work in the background later. I never really draw them out anyway I like them to be more free form (or maybe I am just lazy) The working title is Unicorn Tears but who knows if it will stick. I can't name things, why do people have this silly obsession with giving things names? I feel like things that have long been dormant are coming back to me. We will see where the muse means to take me. I will still be working on Phoenix Moon today.

Have a good one everyone!!!
